In-State for Out-of-State

In-state public universities aren’t the only path to college affordability. Check out Tuition Reciprocity Agreements.

If college affordability is an important factor in your college search, besides your state’s public colleges & universities (let’s just call them “colleges”), you might want to look at colleges that participate in Tuition Reciprocity Agreements with your home state (the state where you live). These agreements allow out-of-state students to pay in-state or reduced out-of-state tuition at some public colleges in other states; or reduced tuition at some private colleges.

Some agreements also include community colleges or postgraduate studies, some may only apply to specific programs or majors, some have specific eligibility requirements, or some may only be renewable after the first year if you maintain a minimum GPA. What each college offers within an agreement may also be different. You will need to check what’s available to you, do the research, paying attention to every detail to understand requirements, and make sure that you are eligible and that it’s a solid option for you.

To find possible out-of-state options, use the tables below:

  1. Look up your home state in 1. States to see what their agreements are.
  2. Follow the link for each agreement in 2. Agreements to research specific details on the website.
