Personal Tutoring

I specialize in math. We all use math in everyday life to one degree or another, whether you realize it or not. If math is scary for you, I can help you find and conquer your inner math demons.

In addition to math, I work with students on other subjects, including science, science research projects, and essay writing.

MATHCOUNTS

MATHCOUNTS is a national middle school mathematics program designed to promote mathematics competency through school clubs and competitions. Competition and practice problems are written to align with the NCTM standards for grades 6-8. Besides providing a framework and materials for schools to set up their own math clubs and run school competitions, the MATHCOUNTS Foundation has additional resources for honing math competency (click on the Resources tab):

  • Set a reminder to check out the Problem of the Week and stay on your competitive math toes.
  • Need a more organized approach to honing your math skills? Check out the Practice Plans.
  • The School Handbook – published annually, the school handbook contains 200+ problems to help student teams train for competition. School competition team coaches provide copies to their team members. Individuals need to provide some basic information to receive a PDF copy of the School Handbook by email.
  • For a guiding hand, Minis are short videos explaining concepts to help you with problem solving. Each video has an activity sheet and solutions. To find the Minis, Click on Video Library under Resources, and scroll down to All Videos. Click the Choose a Category drop down menu, then click MATHCOUNTS Minis and the Apply button.

Art of Problem Solving

The Art of Problem Solving offers math and computer science resources online:

  • For homeschoolers, AoPS has online courses that are accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. The course schedule includes self-paced courses as well as scheduled courses for students in grades 5-12. The courses can be found by clicking on the Online School tab, and are available for a fee.
  • For middle school students training for competitions, AoPS offers a MATHCOUNTS Trainer to hone your skills. Hover your cursor over Resources, then click on MATHCOUNTS Trainer.
  • Ready to challenge other middle school students? For the Win! is an online multiplayer game similar to the MATHCOUNTS Countdown round where you can compete in real time with friends or other students from around the world. For the Win! can also be found by hovering your cursor over the Resources tab.
  • AoPS hosts Math Jams for students who are members of the AoPS Community (free account). Math Jams, free online discussion sessions, can be for students of all levels, from “No Math” knowledge to “Advanced Problem Solvers” (AIME, USAMO). The level of difficulty is indicated in each event description. Math Jams are found under the Online School tab.
  • For seriously advanced math students, AoPS offers Worldwide Online Olympiad Training (WOOT), a 7 month preparation program that has produced USAMO winners in the past. Participation in this training program is available for a fee. WOOT Courses are also found under the Online School tab.
